Be reassured Blitz my good man, it's a dual :) As you can see, even with a bit of tweaking here and there it's hardly state of the art kit. It does play the vast majority of UT3 maps with all the eye candy on max at 60 fps. I do get problems with quite a few of the Warfare maps though; the kit gets all confuzzled and the gfx i assume throws a hissy fit and freezes. I almost bought a Gainward 260 just before Christmas but i would probably need at least a triple core processor to get the full advantage and that would mean still more money. Given I dont play UT3 on line much; bots are much better behaved than the average 13 year old gamer, and the game i do play on line will run on a clockwork pc ;) the incentive to spend what would amount to £200 on gfx card etc is pretty low.

i was using same quite same cpu before i upgraded my rig (athlon64x2 6400 3.2@3.3ghz) and i had same problems (freezes and co on huge & complex-textured maps) the change for a quad have add a lot of fluidity to all and a real + to the game i agree with you your GFX isnt the problem... the cpu is the limiting factor in your rig

Ah, well that is helpfull info Blitz, thanks. Nothing like the experience of others to iron these problems out. I may be able to lay my grubby mits on a second hand quad core from a mate so that has to be worth a try.

UT2004 forever. The one and only game that has special place in my life.
I've done a minor upgrade to my PC today. Got a 1.5TB samsung drive for $79 AUS, which is pretty damn cheap! I also got a new memory kit for it: Patriot
nice price for the HD mate; i just have buy a caviar black 1TB for the same price; urs seems very cheap but can u plz add some details (cache + speed )? thx the patriot kit looks nice too
It's just a basic drive that spins at 5400rpm with 32meg of cache. It'll be used purely for storage. Buying this brings my total capacity up to 3.5TB...although only about 3TB is addressable. At the end of the year I'm considering getting 2 460gtx cards to replace my 275's.

thx for the infos mick u ll change ur 275s ?? lol...what are u going to play with such a toaster? i only have 1 285, which isnt so far from a single 275 and for now it cream all..lol...or did i miss some pc killa game? what do u mean by" only about 3TB is adressable"? oh...a last question: did u try the PhysX UT3 pack? boyah
by 3TB addressable I ment due to the fact that the partition table eats up a certain amount of space on the hard drive. Eg.. The partition table(eg the FAT table) on the 1.5TB drive uses 140gig so I can only access 1.36TB on the drive.
Regarding the gfx cards, I want DX11 cards but if I'm going to get some I want to make it a beefy upgrade. The 2 460's will beat the pants off a single 480 from what I've read, and are roughly the same price!
Yup, I tried the physX pak a while back. I really liked the lighthouse one and loved the tornado on the other map, but admittidly I didn't like the layout on the Tornado map.
just have installed my PhenomII 1090T....what a CPU! it s running very cold (idle:34°c/full charge:41°c) and stable at 6 x 3.5ghz with my old AC Freezer64....amazing :p
héhé i just finished my PC upgrade;good bless EBay & AMD!... :p
here are the new spects; DX11 and DDR3 helped me to save money; i still on DDR2 & DX10 but honnestly this time the PC looks fast; 20500pts in 3DMk06...i should not have to upgrade for the next two years

Very very nice M8! I give it that salute! Normally I'd bait ya about your passion for AMD CPU's however Intel's 6core is waaay over priced so it's a logical choice if one want's to go for a 6core processor. Those 2 285's will give you a smooooooth ride methinks!
Nah SLi'n two 460's is the way to go. They are a cheaper and much faster option over a single 480. The 460's run cooler and use less power than the 470 and 465's as well.
Here's the conclusion from Tom.(note the 26% faster that a single 480) Read the full article to see some interesting results.
A lot of peeps on tha web say avoid SLi, but I've never had any issues myself, and a few of tha guys here are running SLi setups without any major issues!

i was still having ramdomly bsod & freezes on my main rig so after days n days hunting the problem it seem that i have replace all the parts of the PC...except the mobo which is an old model but a brand new one from the shop (some month :p) i ve reassembled the same pc but on another mobo and it worked like a charm, so i ve put the mobo in it box and i m gonna send it back to the shop tommorow with my RAM memory... the fraqn mobo have burn three RAMs on 4 and was sending overpowered tensions to the VCore (1.53 instead of the 1.4125) i dont want to damage all my material! +.+ fortunatly this isnt related to my OC experiences and all should be replaced under warranty
so i ve "work" a little on my second pc (new os install and update of all the drivers) just to let you know that 2x8800gt + phenom940 4x3.4ghz gives a perfect and stabble 100fps on all UT3 stock maps (shangrila include) on EBay for 100 euros u can grab 2 8800gt with no prob, a new phenom 940 is around 90€ and a new AM2+ SLI mobo is around 80 € all that to say that for 370€ finally u can build a very good PC....16500 3DM06 points....
i did several benches and i m gonna list the results soon round here; some "improvements"/upgrades not always gives the expected results haha...
...oh....and i forgot to add that ASUS SUCKS! they lie to customers telling that mobo and cpu are compatible...compatible yes but not under OC modes! ...and when they are technically unabble to answer(...and that happen very fast when u mail em) ...they just kick away and send ya to the shop which sold ya ur material!
if i buy another mobo i ll try to dodge on the MSI ones...
just to mention that some month ago we have a buy a new ASUS lappy that arrived with a damaged usb system, ASUS never accepted it (they told we damaged it! the whole mobo was to replace like if an elephant have plug his horn in the usb plug) and never gived us back any money or service...hoppefully the PC shop know that i m "honnest" and after some hesitations they repared it for free..shame on ASUS!!!
Must be that AMD crap you're running M8! Would never happen with Intel based systems! heh heh heh
On a serious note, it's a shame about your issues with ASUS. Generally they're decent products.... I've mostly built systems with Gigabyte mobo's and have rarely had issues. However my i7 is using an ASUS mobo (P6T) which, according to a couple of stores over here, had major memory compatibility issues to the point where they stopped selling the P6T's. Seeing I had no issues I put it down to them building PC's with cheap RAM...
Last but not least....Since going to 6gig of RAM my map compiling times have halved. Dunno if it's the extra 2 gig or the fact it's tripple channeled now but my maps are compiling waaaaay quikker....

same here for the RAM from 2x2gb to 4x2gb....it was a pure jump in build time
about ASUS yeah i have install an asus mobo with an intel socket on my sistas rig...she had no real issues except with the asus programs (AI suite and so) they just havent find the way to mix nvidia chipsets & GFXs with AMD cpus and they quite prooved it ...my formula II is the last "special OC" mobo from ASUS...the formula III and IV use amd chipsets...no real efficient AM3 mobo since they "stoped" building AM2+ sockets
another reason for me to change for msi...i secretly hope that the mobo have a big bug and that they send me my money back to buy a msi one....but i m a dreama haha
Good ta see another Q6600 being put to good use! Damn good CPU's them!
Heh Yeah! I was delighted that its still going strong. This computer was the first one I built myself.
The old 8600 GTS crapped out and as a result I needed to get a new PSU. while doing that I thought upgrading the ram would be nice. As it turns out a new Mobo and 8 gigs of (6300) ram is cheaper than 6 gigs of (5400)ram. Because it was a DELL i needed a new case as the dell use the opposite side of the case to others.
So in essence I need to build an entirely new PC. A very stressful experience. I don't know how anyone would do that more than once :P But it all worked out in the end :)
I'm happy to report that I got my xmas pressie early!
I'm now running 2 of these babies ! My cards are the "Talon Attack" version which run a 810Mhz core (675 is stock) and 3900Mhz (3600 stock) on the memory! Apparently these "Talon Attack" cards are quikker than stock 470's! They cost more than what I was planning on spending...but damn I can't complain. (plus admittidly getting 2 identical 460's was harder than what I first thought) I haven't benched them but be assured they will soon be!
Only downside is the lack of mem sinks but the memory is better than standard and the dual fans should ensure good airflow.
I'm very happy with these cards. First of all they're shorter than the 275's by an inch or two so I've got instant improvement on airflow through the case!
The only thing that gives these Talon cards a run for their money is Metro 2033. I'm sad to say that I had to cut back to 1680x1050 and even then it's a bit choppy(but playable). Admittidly I'm running it at the highest gfx settings with all options on...and it looks very very pretty...even thought it's a gritty post-apoclyptic theme. I'm glad steam had it on sale 2 weeks back!
The 460's do run quite hot and you can feel quite a bit of heat radiating off the back of the card where the GPU sits, but I've experienced none of the heat related issues that I was getting with the 275's which is good to see. I'd hate to see these cards with a stock cooler.. I was a bit concerned with the heatsink n fan design with the fact that it doesn't blow the hot air out the back of the case, but I've realized that in a SLi setup the open fan design is better in that the surrounding air is more accessible to the card as the fan/sink is more open rather than a single point at the back of the card which only has a couple of milimeters lee-way to suck the air in through due to the 2nd card sitting right next to it.
AvP looks and plays better than ever in Dx11 so I might have to replay it during my holiday break!

100% agree with you on that
...and if u have a powerfull air flow in ur case even in single card use this "design" GFXs gives better results than the "enboxed" stock ones
Some interesting info regarding using older cards for physX. Apparently, it's a general rule, that you should only use a card for physX that has atleast half the performance of the primary gfx setup that you are using. If you use slower cards they will bottle neck ya gfx processing cards (as it has to wait for the physics to be processed) and give slower framerates. I'm spewing as I have this 8800gts here that will just slow tha 460's down. :(
Time to find some cables and I'll hook up one of my 275's for physX to see how Metro runs.
i received today my new mobo & my RAM.....installed all and when i was close to finish i realised that this mobo have no more IDE plug.....and my DVD is an old IDE.....lol i have to wait some days more to grab a sata one :p i have noticed some nice features on this 120€ mobo compared to my 200€ old one: -cpu 12V is 8pins and no more 4 like on asus -6 pins additionnal power on the mobo to stabilise GFXs -sata 6gb/s instead of 3 only on the asus (hopefully i have a hd 600kb/s compatible)
MSI 870A Fuzion AMD PhenomII 1090T @6x3.5ghz / AC Freezer64 4 x 2Gb DDR3/1333 Kingston HyperX Lucid Hydra: 2 x MSI GTX285 Superpipe OC Caviar Black 1Tb 6Gb/s + Barracuda 500Gb 3Gb/s BFG 800w Antec Nine Hundred Akasa Fan Controler / air in: 3x120 / air out: 1x200 + 1x120 Saitek Cyborg / Roccat Kone [+] / Nova OverslideIII Logitech Z640 5.1 / USB 3.0 / Phillips 22"
first MSI mobo, 2 x more options than on ASUS ones via the bios, better softwares Hydra technologie still quite "experimental" ,anyway it s very promising and the results on a single card are impressive...not a lot of documentation on how it work and u have to test n see no problem to use PhysX as far as u connect a Nvidia GFX in the Pci-e Slot n°1
+: price, new & innovant technologies; military class components;bios options
-: lacking documentations & manuals; lot of trys to get it working; quite no "feedback" for new mobos
im happy with it and the pc performs good, i m going to try to "ride" the Hydra and if all s ok i ll be back soon to buisness
after the expertise from OCZ they send me back my money for the 3 barrets of "toasted" RAMs ...that mean that i wasnt guilty....always good to know.....muhahaha :p

just finished to test both mashines and all work nicely, honnestly MSI is better than ASUS for me, all is so easy to install and several things auto adjust alone, no bug or bsod even with a lil OC...wasnt so easy on ASUS mobos...i m happy and tommorow i m back to buisness....dead eyes now...need to sleep
