I just want to recommend you a nice little tool, called tree[d]. It's an easy to handle alternative to speedtree. The feature set is limited of course but it has a major advantage over speedtree: tree models are real static meshes and therefore not as performance heavy as speedtrees, and you can export your models to blender for doing manually adjustments afterwards (the free udk speedtree version has this option disabled). Well and last but not least it might come handy for all you UT3 addicts that don't use speedtree at all.
The prog is free for both, non-commercial and commercial use - as long as you don't sell a tree model pack
Sorry but which is the square leaf planes ? Are you referring to the stock meshes ?
When you make a tree model in tree[d] or speedtree there is usually a square plane for each leaf or group of leaves.
It's important to make textures that cover that whole space because of perfomance reasons. If you take the picture of a lengthy (f.e. 1:2 or 1:4 ratio) branch with leaves and just put it on a square texture, there will be a noticeable frame drop.
Yes. For tree[d] the rotation is already correct. I can't tell for nobiax models but the texture will fit otherwise :) Btw, you can also do the texture rotation in the material editor, just saying.

I Saw this Tree[d] application before i joined UOF. - i thought it was a great idea, but then it made me realise how i might be able to make simple trees in 3DSMax.
- i made a upk with a few Generated tree's, imported these into 3dsmax and had a play around. - i think i might be able to make simple trees and vegetation from scratch now. :)
- so in review. * Good application * even better for simplify the creation of more complex tree's * provides a window to the world of 3d modelling for the beginner
...and if i find this "genereated_trees.upk", that i created, people are welcome to it. ^^ it also works well with some of the udk foliage and textures i made to imitate the udk ones removed from dm-albatross after i was refused release. [ferns for example.]
In my opinion the biggest disadvantage of treed is that you can't use tree leaves of different shapes (or custom leave planes at all). So you either end up with a lack of variation and a rectangular look or with a bad performance.
If you use 3ds max there are a few good plugins for generating trees, like TreeGen for example.
