FYI

All bench that as been made since 1 years about the correct amount of memory needed for the latest games in 1680*1050 & more is around 640 MB to 800 MB. Higher VRAM than 1 GB is completely useless for games.

An advice from a tech, more than 1 GB is good only for CAD CAO/DAO or pro apps like Catia, LightWave & such so don't waste your money on useless hardware m8. 1 GB is more than enough for now smile

Also I would wait for the 69xx series which is supposed to be out in the coming weeks wink

Steve is correct, 1gig of memory on a card is fine for any modern game.
Also remember in SLI(probably CF as well) setups only the memory on the primary card is used! So even though you have 2 1gig cards only 1gig on the primary card will be used.

So 1GB is plenty ok then but Why have two card when 1GB going to waste totaly usless IMO.

Still the 6870 would be faster then 460 or 470 big time.

Problem wth dual card solutions is that there will be lag if the memory on the second card is used as it's pulled across the bridge into the primary card and then out to the display. I could be wrong with that but I suspect that's what only the primary card memory is used.

470 n 6870 are roughly on par with each other. 470 has physx whereas I think the 6870 is slightly cheaper. Let us know what card you get and how it runs!

Here a some stats of how my ATI 6850 handles UT3 on fullest setting and at 1680x1050 Res.

All DM map ranmging in size etc.

Testing time was about 3 min on most of the maps.

DM-Crash, FPS Lowest: 100, Avg: 160, Highest:212

DM-Conquestor-SE, FPS Lowest: 66, Avg: 130, Highest: 190

DM-Duality, FPS Lowest: 113, Avg: 170, Highest: 193

DM-Idoma, FPS Lowest: 65, Avg: 92, Highest: 178

DM-Korumi, FPS Lowest: 95, Avg: 172, Highest: 213

Had a go of GTA IV with custom ENB Graphics and Custom cars and it seem to lag just a tiny bit not much or anything to stop game play.

Hightest Settings and 1680x1050 res.

Tryed to Benchmark but the game crashed odd.....

Games to try Mass Effect 1 & 2 Hightest Settings and 1680x1050 res.

Starcraft II Offline mode not work atm but when I get the net from late Dec I'll try. Hightest Settings and 1680x1050 res.

Dawn of war Soulstorm run smooth. Hightest Settings and 1680x1050 res.

Have not tryed Dawn of War II or Choas raising.

maybe try reinstalling the drivers, or the previous driver and see if this resolves the issue?
Also, did you uninstall the nvidia drivers for your previous card?

It might help to check the system logs and see if there's an entry for whatever is halting the shutdown process by not closing properly.

Download the physix drivers from nvidia and install them. You won't need a nvidia card, just the drivers themselves.

Just done some searching on Epic and found that someone was having the exact same crashing issues as me.  Epic Thread

This line in his logs is exactly the same as mine
"CxxThrowException() Address = 0x723c8e69 (filename not found) [in C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a 1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_none_10b2f55f9bffb8f8\MSVCR8 0.dll]"

Fortunately they've claimed moving everything out of the unpublished folder works....here's hoping I can keep my maps intact....

hey mate, it s always recommended to do a fresh Windows install when u moove from ati to nvidia (or from nvidia to ati :p) to prevent thoses kind of things...
dont feel alone bro ; it s my 8th OS install in 3 days here to manage thoses drivers affairs & uncompatibilities (ATI, Nvidia & LucidHydra....) if the first installs was bugged like hell i must admit the the 8 th is quite perfect now ...just need to figure how work this hydra thing but it finally installed wink.gif
each install helps u to understand what is wrong or not :p
