Being a fan of Destruction Derby 1 and 2 since ages such as Flatout 2/Flatout: Ultimate Carnage, today I stumbled across a game on Steam that is the spiritual successor to those franchises - also made by the developers of the Flatout games I played: Bugbear.
Here some screenshots:
Softbody physics, demolition derbies, races without rules and destroyable environments... and 24 cars (those of you who played Destruction Derby and Flatout and were slightly disappointed by the somewhat low amount of opponents in Flatout will love to read that number)!!
You can already purchase it in two editions (Deluxe or regular), it is in early alpha stage featuring two cars to choose from (one American and one European car), two tracks (one mud track and a regular race track) and one derby arena. The hardware requirements also seem quite fine and you can give feedback so the developers can improve it...
...or to quote what I wrote to a friend about this game (who likes Flatout too) when letting him know about its existence:
I'm really thinking about purchasing this right now - I don't care if bugged, feature-lacking alpha or not.
The only thing that is holding me back though is the fear of getting a censored version later on (like Flatout 2 having dummy-drivers in the German version for example).
I got early access on this one just before xmas!
If you liked Destruction Derby or the Flatout games then you'll like this one!
The Sneak Peek v2.0 physics demo is awesome awesome fun, which you get if you buy in now! However if you just want to check out their more basic soft physics demo, just sign up to the newsletter at their site and you can grab it for free.
Just a warning about the basic soft physics demo...once you play it you'll want to buy it! :x
(you'll get that joke if you've tried the game, it's pretty much a newer flatout 2 but with worse car "feeling", much much worse, really crappy graphics and well completely ****!)
So, I finally gave this game an excessive go. I fell in love with it!
So guys, if I am even less active regarding mapping but still post here, you know why.
All it lacks now to be a sequel to Destruction Derby with a different name is the announcer. I'd like to hear "TAKEDOWN!" or "WRECKED!" get announced in a badass voice.
I love FlatOut 2, many and many hours spent with this game. Thanks for informating me that Bugbear is making another car game, FlatOut 3 was made by other developers and it wasn't as great as FO2.

If you liked FlatOut 2, I suggest to check out FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage. It's basically FlatOut 2 with 12 cars in a race instead of just 8, improved graphics and improved AI.
Unfortunately it doesn't have Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth and makes use of Games for Windows - live for online matches.

You are being way too nice, FlatOut 3 was complete crap! (really bad graphics despite being over 5 years newer than the predecessor, no driving feel, terrible physics). If I where to point out one good thing about Flatout 3 - Chaos & Destruction I'd have nothing.
One of many examples showing why a franchise should stay with its developers. Passing it on to other devs usually results in disappointments, Unreal II was one of those cases unfortunately (despite being a good game it was not a good Unreal game).

true....but now i wish they can pass the baby to other devs.....instead of acting like if the game and the community are six feet down and have never exist....+.+.......speaking of UT....of course
need for speed is a good example about how nice or crap can turn games ...you never know how it will look and play :P
