Thought I'd start a thread on Star Citizen for those folk who have been living under a rock and haven't heard about it or don't follow regular updates on the development progress.  My intention is to update this post with the latest vids and major info updated as they are released.

Star Citizen is a space flight/combat sim from Cloud Imperium Games and is headed by Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame!

Official Website:  https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

Core info:

Star Citizen is completely crowd funded and at the time of writing this they've raised $24,584,727 (that's almost 24.6 million!).  For every Million dollar increment they get to they reveal additional gameplay elements that will be included in the game if they reach that million level funding goal.

It's being developed for Flight Sim enthusiasts without being hampered by publishers who like to dumb things down so they can capture a wider gaming audience. They’re also going for realistic simulation when it comes to flight physics.

Is being developed for the PC and runs on the latest version of CryTeck’s CryEngine.  This game isn’t being reduced in quality to cater for console hardware restrictions!  The game is being designed for the 4K standard so the game will challenge top end PC hardware of today and future hardware.

The game will cater for the PvE and PvP crowds. There will be a Single Player campaign and MMO(ish) component to the game.  Core game mechanics are based around dog fighting, exploration and some FPS gameplay such as ship boarding.  Larger ships will cater for co-op play amongst friends.  Capital ships will cater for groups of people working together which is very interesting!

The game will be released in stages (modules). The hangar module is already released to pledgers with alpha/Beta access.  December will see the dog fighting module (can’t wait!!). Next year will see the planet side module followed by the ship boarding/fps module then the Single player campaign and finally the primary MMO/persistent world component of the game.

Assuming funding hits $25 Million (which it pretty much will), there will be American, Australian and European servers to lower pings for all us gamers.  For us Australians this is most welcomed news!

The cheapest game package that I recommend to get you in the game with a ship and alpha/Beta access (like Hangar and Dog Fighting Modules) is the “Digital Mercenary”.  It’ll set you back $40 USD. (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/store/69-digital-mercenary ) For a game of this quality and calibre that’s a good price in my opinion!

Each player account can have multiple ‘game packages’.  Each game package you own gets you one character in-game. You can have multiple game packages to allow for multiple characters.  Each game package can have multiple ships assigned to that ‘game package’.

They have proposed an interesting death mechanic for the game which is explained here:  https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/12879-Death-Of-A-Spaceman

Other personal things I wanted to mention:

There is a fantastic amount of detail going into the game assets from what they’ve shown so far.  The detail level of the dual ****pit on the Super Hornet is a real treat on the eyes.  Chris and Co have stated that they are going for higher poly counts over higher detailed textures due to the better processing ability of current gen hardware in PCs.

The space environment shown in the Hornet advertisement is hands down the best space environment I’ve seen in a game engine so far.  My hat off to all involved in creating the atmosphere shown in that vid.

There’s an “Ask the Developer” section on the forums for folk who have pledged.  Here you can ask questions directly to some of the development staff involved in the game and I’m quite happy to report that the developers address all the worthwhile questions that are asked.  This section is also a good place to learn about proposed game mechanics that the devs are thinking of implementing.

Now onto the good stuff…

Here’s some recommended links with vids:

Here's some in-game pics I took showing off the Super Hornet to show the amount of detail they've put into the model!

Crawls out from under rock.... Thanks for the info LPS! Looks sweet. Got me really thinking how awesome it would be if Epic could crowd fund a new UT just for PC and just the way we want it... If this group is successful producing a serious AAA game, it might change how they are done forever.

Gave it a quick run before I left for work! Very pretty and a lot of fun. Eager for the work day to finish so I can get home to run it again!
SLi doesn't work properly atm(lots of artifacts) so it'll run even better once the resolve that issue!

Nah uses Cryengine. I suspect Unreal Engine doesn't have the same physics capabilities as Cryengine.

I finally got access to Multiplayer last night and it's a lot of fun...if you can find players!
