Whoever played the first Unreal single player, that word in the subject title will be familiar. It's what most Nalis "say" when they first see the player.
Greetings to everyone.
After I laughed reading the introduction of TKBS, here's my intro.
I've been in love with Unreal since I first god an old CD (unreal 1 by epic) and I managed to build a cdrom from parts found in the city dump. That happened around 1999. As I am from Eastern Europe, the true technology came to the general public later than to companies, so often people had to do 'extreme stuff' to get good hardware with little investment (lubricating CDrom mechanisms with black shoe cream, using bacon grease instead of thermal CPU vaseline, overclocking an old PC to squeeze more power). Still in love with Sinclair Spectrums and PDP-11 (the soviet clone) with huge tape drives and 8" floppies.
I currently serve at several petroleum drilling well sites in the middle of nowhere (forests, deserts, mountains, they only send me offshore during cold weather to freeze my butt). No internet, no fun, just mud and stinky smell. And no better way to spend my spare time than playing Unreal. I was witness to the rise and decline of several huge web sites dedicated to Unreal single player such as Hellscrag and UnrealSPVault. I laughed like a little devil when shooting skaarj, I felt hope while reading translator messages telling about survivors from ISV Kran. And I was almost disapointed when I arrived too late to save the blonde girl in the tower. I felt alone with the limited Nali scripts as they completely ignored anything else than enemies or my weapon. But I am never bored of Unreal single player. Later I discovered that the blonde girl was already dead, since the mappers designed the level. Then I started to explore the secrets of the first UnrealED. And since that day I did not advance to newer games anymore. Just jumped to Unreal Tournament + old skool ampd + 227 patch.
I got here because of a google search result about Unreal single player. This is what I like, and I wish that game to be more realistic, not just a mechanical process of 'shoot and kill'. This is what the great games have different and this is what a game requires to get the player in love with it for ever. And this is why the 'bots-based' games just come and vanish. I am trying to talk to mr. Lord_Porksword about his project and see if he likes these ideas.
About skills - I only play. I rarely enter UnrealED and that only to create scripted scenarios for who-knows-what animation movies. On my computer I mostly run BSD Unix, so I may be helpful with information about running unreal games with emulators. Sorry, I stopped working with Linux more than a decade ago and I cannot offer any expertize, except for the long discontinued Linux Red Hat families.
Thank you for your patience.
