I sorta feel like Alcoholics Anonymous or something like that. It's been 1 day since my last usage of UT or the editor... I'm sorry for my transgression LOL! Anyway, sorry I haven't posted here before. Bl!tz invited me a long time ago and I feel bad that I haven't chimed in until now.
Unreal and UT has been a bit of a touchstone for me. I think alot of the old timers here were hooked the first time we walked out of Vortex Rikers (with our brand spanking new Voodoo cards). Those were good times so of course we always want to keep the good times going. When UT came out, I had a few years of fairly regular lan parties at my house and drank many beers and had some great memorable times. Also, my little MCC server used to be a full house online - what a blast that was.
It sucks that the UT community is so small now, but that doesn't stop me from playing and its cool that most of you guys are hangin' in there. In between real life, I try to stay sane by mapping. Even though I'm a total hack at it, it is a nice diversion. Once I got addicted to mapping, I've basically stuck with UT3 because of the better visuals capability and since I'm basically making maps that I want, it feels like I'm customizing it for my own use so there's no real reason to go back and play or map 2004 or 99 regularly. I updated my old website to Wordpress so you can check out the map info there (see sig). It's my 12 year old alter ego...(keeps me young!) You are all welcome to login there and leave comments if you want. If any of you are on the west coast US and want to jump on my server for a round, just let me know. I say that because I usually don't play until after family duties have been taken care of so it might be tough to hook up with other timezones.
Here's my cure for Epic to turn around the UT series: Bring back the sports Tournament aspect but bring in the Gears COGs! Hey they brought Predator and Alien worlds together, why not bring the COGs in and have "Gears vs Unreal Tournament". Seriously, I bet it could help revive the series but that's just my two cents and it would be a blast. UT is not pulling in players right now so it's time to have a gimmick to bring players back. I have the COGs in my UT and it's hilarious having them in there. If it was thought out from the start, I think it could work.
In real life, I'm an electrical engineer by trade but got suckered into management several years ago so now I manage a group of senior and principal electrical engineers. It's a burnout job so UT is definitely a nice release. I live in Central California and I just turned 49 (1963).
Okay, I have to talk about age here. If Steve is the uncle, then I've got to be the grandpa! Seriously I guess I'm the oldest guy here which I find amazing and somewhat hilarious!
Edit: Removed my pic. Enough is enough already!
Rock on UOFs!

Nice to finally formally meet ya ... I'm originally from Santa Cruz Ca .. <before I moved to Nevada> any way cool write up man. Yeah I remember my 1st 3DFX Monster Voodoo card; first publicly available card with hardware acceleration ah Motoracer, Whiplash, Decent 2, etc. I remember literally driving to Canopus in San Jose to pick up a Pure 3D card back in the day (maybe slightly before UT) then Nvidia arrived on the scene with the Geforce cards - they would eventually buy out 3DFX / Voodoo .. I was on the cutting edge of hardware because of our consulting business at that time. Yes certainly good times indeed. There was nothing like playing the original UT online with real people; and head-shotting the endless waves of nOObs that would come around the corners on CTF-Facing worlds, we also used to impact hammer camp at the top teleport of Face so as soon as they'd come through they were toast. We actually played on the CTF ladders competitively back in the UT99 / early 2003 days - it truly was like a virtual sport, an absolute rush; this is why we still play on our LAN to this day. / Ah yeah Beer UT & the LAN ... good times good times.
Wait Steve posted his pic? must have missed that ..
I started mapping again with UT3 for LAN use, ended up at the Epic forums releasing some of what I'd made for personal use and ultimately arrived here with a bunch of cool dudes with the same interests. - The community is very small and getting smaller compared to each previous year, although I noticed there are lots of downloaders and people who view threads on the Epic forums but don't say anything, apparently not everyone is as social or talkative as some of us. If everyone who downloaded something posted a simple thank you I imagine the community would seem probably about 25 times bigger, at any rate; its all good & this is the internet after all.
Personally between my business/family/RL I haven't much time if any to play online recently, Odedge used to have a UT3 server that he rented and I'm sure he'll be happy to see someone else here from our neck of the woods. <the trick will be getting him over here to notice this thread> lol.
Hope to see ya around <gramps>. - while I do respect your modesty; I actually dig your maps dude, hardly hack. <believe me I can spot a hack job when I see it> ... heh ...
Peace bro.

Welcome Maul. I am a native southern Californian myself and have been playing the UT series for a while (since 2003/4). I think I may be the second oldest guy here (41), but I don't keep track of such things.
Can you please post your site's address as I don't show signatures (and must be too lazy to toggle them off).

Thanks 1X. Sounds like you had similar experiences in the early UT days. The good ole days...
Hey Marty if ya ever feel like doing some private testing with us let us know! <we have a fairly substantial private area with WIP, etc.> 5 bucks says I can get ya access in a heart-beat if you were interested, especially considering you're still fairly active on the scene. No pressure & no rush either though, just wanted to put that out there.
BTW I heard a good thing on Epic about the staff playing the latest CBP maps @HQ before they were released. If that's not a small hint at the very least it indicates they still have interest in the series .. and- their paying attention to the community.

I wouldn't mind checking out the WIP area but no pressure from me back at ya. That is very cool about Epic playing CBP maps. I'm not holding my breath about any future UT's of course. I was always hoping Cliffy would get back involved with it but he's gone now obviously. I think alot of the humorous over-the-top side came from him. Good to hear they still pay attention to the community. Flak probably helps with that.

Nice site. I didn't realize you are the MCC guy from Epic forums. That hangar map is pretty damn cool. Irrc, I opened up the Kismet window and said... WTF?!?!?

Take that as a compliment.
Odedge might be a little slow sometimes .. but he makes up for it by sheer consistency & determination.
Yeah no doubt this guy has been a huge asset to the community! like I said he has a link to your site, Nova's & Thrallalla's personal pages, Cr4zy's, etc, on that slick website of his.
Speaking of slow <Ode> there's a thread that requires your attention in the admin forum ya filthy animal..
<almost everyone else has answered> - waiting for you chief.

Well, Odedge wouldn't be so slow if you would stop pushing him into that slo mo field.
I know right ...
I like to run the MCC site in the background when I map, it has a kick-azz rotation of unreal tunes.
Marty, I really dig the dynamic music thing you have going on your site. IMO the music from the UT series is some of the best in any video game ever period.
If your at all into remixes I have some killer shiat.
A remix of Superfist complete with an intro <its pretty much professional grade> you can hear that in my UOF-CTF-AndAction2K10 spam fest map , I also have a nice remix of Run and some others. If your interested I can upload them, if not no worries.

Talking about remixes, long ago, Elisha uploaded awesome remixes on YouTube, a remix of the Rrajigar Mines soundtrack Shared Dig, of the Harobed Village soundtrack and a few more. And they are really great!

The Kismet in Fith is pretty insane also. If you're bored, you can open up the matinee for the door on the floor blowing off for some laughs. It was quite a PITA trying to get that to look right. In the end, it looks more like a leaf blowing in the wind LOL! The other funny thing is that where the door ended up it blocked player movement from one angle so I had to slide in a wedge shaped dynamic blocking volume at the end of the sequence. I used to do quite a bit of FPGA design on the engineering side so I think I'm drawn to it due to the logic design aspect of it.
I made a very basic version of Hangar for UT2004 as my first map but Hangar for UT3 was my first real effort and it shows because I would do it differently now. I probably took a few years off my life making it .

Glad you like the music on there. I'm probably violating some EULA's but I will wait until someone asks me to take it down . I downloaded the Skyward fire remix. You can upload the others if you get a chance. Just so happens I added more music on there yesterday so there's about 50 songs on there now.

Yeah I tried to get a good mix across all UT's. Some great stuff in there.
