"You've been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment on a penal colony. But the prison ship has crash landed on an unknown planet... Look around. Crystal clear water shimmers. Shadows shift. Alien architecture fades into the horizon. Godless temples beckon. Darkness falls. You are an uninvited guest in the fastest, sleekest, most dangerous 3D world ever created. Live it. Breathe it. Survive it!"
This thread is dedicated to the 1st map in my Legacy mod. This map is my modernized version of the Vortex Rikers. I've taken the events and layout of the original map and have updated it to modern UT3 standards mixed with my own personal style of hi-tech with strong coloured lighting while attempting to keep the same atmosphere and feel of the original map!
This map includes quite a bit of dynamic lighting, custom textures, scritped events, audio samples from the original game and interactive elements to achieve my goal.
I've included almost all the original diary messages from the original game as hope that this brings back memories to those who remember the original map! I'm only an amatuer mapper so I hope I've done the Vortex Rikers justice with this remake!
I hope you enjoy this small homage to the original Unreal game that has inspired imagination in many games around the world!
For those who like their multiplayer action, I've also created a multiplayer version of this map. The MP version is titled "Vortex Legacy" and is part of the very soon to be released UoF DM Map Pack . This Deathmatch version contains a modified layout to better suit the gametype!
PS3 Note: Unfortunately this Mod doesn't run on the PS3.
Play Notes (Read before playing!):
* I recommend playing the original level before trying my version!
*Choose Deathmatch as the game type then look for 'Legacy'.
*Set Number of Combatants to 1 and time to atleast 13 minutes!
* Use the 'e' key to interact with objects! Green terminals are 'active' terminals!
*Remember this is a single player level, wander around a look at stuff. Don't just run through the level as it ruins the experience!
*The Universal Translator messages will dissapear after a short period of time or when you move away from the terminal!
*Try not to get killed...as I don't know what will happen!
*This map is very dark...it's supposed to be!
*Map uses custom music written by my good mate Ben Coutts!
Version 1.1 changes:
*Messages now appear for a lot longer before dissapearing(30 secs), for those who'se native language is not english. Move away from the activated console to turn of quicker.
*Added message at the beginning about the e key!
*Moved one active console!
*Shorter cut of the music track!
*Changed animation of Krall in Air ducts! He now gets away! (thanx Sly)
*Tweaked a few other things! (like the Enforcer pickup)
Requirements:
* UT3 + Patch 2.1 + Titan Pack + UT3DOM version 5 is required to play this map!!
Credits:
*Huge thanx to Juan Pancho Eekels for creating the original Vortex Rikers level. I can still remember the first time I entered the dark, haunting atmosphere of the Vortex Rikers many years ago!
*The UOF mappers/testers for putting up with my somewhat crazy tastes when it comes to lighting and their help and support with making this map! Special thanx to Achernar for his breaking glass effect!!!
*Ben "Baggy" Coutts for writing some superb music to go with this map!
*Epic for the editor & assets and for giving us the original Unreal game that has inspired me to this day!
Additional comments:
The player models arms will appear if you look down and will only dissapear once you pickup a weapon. I cannot fix this bug!
Feedback welcome! Let me know if you'd like to see more of Legacy!
If you'd prefer something more authentic to the original checkout Sly's work here!
Also please annoy Epic and request that they port UT3 into UDK for us!
Also let Epic know that you'd love for them to make an Unreal re-make with a larger scale than the original and with RPG elements! hint hint!!
Congratz to your first Legacy map release! Guess it's my turn now to finish my first remake map.
EDIT: I've read the description below the picture and it seemed so familiar... so I looked at the signed copy of Unreal Flak sent me and noticed that you have chosen that one.
I thought it was funny that they've written it on the upper side of the packaging and you have to rotate it around 360° to be able to read the whole text. lol
I guess it would be better if we had an own gametype for or projects that changes pawn behaviour and weapons, but it's damn hard to find a coder who has some sparetime.

Good ta see that story caught your attention! I don't have my original box anymore and I wasn't able to find a photo of the back of the box to see what story they had written for the game. After crawling the interwebs for a bit I stumbled across that.

I figure you could need the back of the packaging if you want to make a page dedicated to your mod. Would be cool to make a page with the same layout as the packaging. Here are the three other texts on the back with a description of layouts of pictures and text: (Upper right)
UNREAL (the typical golden logo)
(on the left side of the back are all texts)
YOUR SENSES EXPANDED...
The most advanced 3D engine ever created.
Spectacular colored lighting and hyper realistic environmental effects in software and hardware.
Destined to bring gaming into the 21st century, Unreal will expand perceptions and set the benchmark for all games to follow.
(to the right of the first text: (small-sized) ingame picture of Harobed village, Prisoner 849 holding an Automag and a Skaarj shooting 4 projectiles into his/her direction, the church tower to the left and the village to the right in the background) (to the right of this picture: picture of Skaarj standing in front of a female corpse in the ISV Kran, frog perspective) (directly below the text: (middle-sized) picture of the cloister Bluff Eversmoking from distance, showing the path with the gates at the background/right and the closter closer to camera (middle distance) at the middle to left)
second text to the right of the Bluff Eversmoking picture:
YOUR FEARS UNLEASHED...
Ruthless artificial intelligence.
Unreal enemies are intelligent, cunning masters of their domain - they will track you down anywhere, communicate with each other, call in reinforcements if necessary and relentlessly pursue you.
(to the right of the second text: two (small-sized) pictures (middle-sized) picture with ISV Kran scene with corpse and Skaarj above the first of the two pictures is slightly overlapping the top of the the (small-sized) picture showing the Dark Arena and 849 holding an Eightball and a huge Titan standing in front of him/her, right of this picture is a picture of 849 standing in the church in Sky Town holding a Sniper Rifle while there is a Skaarj trooper holding one too, aiming at him/her. left side of this picture is overlapping a part of the Dark Arena scene)
third text below the second text and Bluff Eversmoking picture together with two pictures:
YOUR REALITY ALTERED - FOREVER
Designed to be the ultimate multi-player experience.
"Hot-link" between user created levels (like web site links).
Portals, distinctive skins, identifiable weapons and more.
Multi-player levels are included.
(below the text is a (small-sized) picture showing a player (again in 1st person) holding the Dispersion Pistol in the left hand while two female bots are fighting each other with Dispersion Pistols on Deck 16, near Bio Rifle on the bridge leading up to it, player standing with Bio Rifle behind him/her a (middle-sized) picture of a Skaarj standing with his back turned to the entrance to the Bluff Eversmoking cloister in attack position shown standing in front of camera, lower left corner of picture overlapping upper right corner of Deck 16 picture)
(lower right corner: big "picture" of a Brute with "3D effect", detail texture on it and blur, such as in black and white, its left shoulder is overlapping with the lower left corner such as a part of the lower middle of the church picture with the Skaarj trooper)
(All pictures except the Brute have three white, "dirty" frames which are overlapping themselves surrounding them, the titles of each text is written in bolt letters, which are like pasted from different articles with different font sizes and dirty corners and small stripes next to them, like distortion)
If I get my camera working, I might post a picture, but now the battery is totally dead and I can have it on for like 2 seconds until it's off again.

Feedback welcome! Let me know if you'd like to see more of Legacy!
I did play this map yesterday and I really like what you have done to give it the feeling of a real single player map. I would like to see more of Legacy! :)
Here are some little 'problems' which I noticed:
- the terminal messages could stay a bit longer in my opinion. speeking as a non native english I had to reopen the first messages due to their length
- for some reason I can see a copy of the player lower arms flying in the air. No idea if this is a common problem but I remember seeing something similar before ...
- you might add to the description that you either have to press 'e' for interactions or another key that is bound to the 'use' command
As a thought I could always only close the messages when the player walks away from the terminal or atleast set a 40 second delay so there's a lot more time to read it. My ideal solution would be to have the player press the 'e' key again to close it but I cannot work out how to get this working. :(
Regarding the 'e' key I was kinda hoping people will read the Play notes on the forum as they advisee you to use the 'e' key for interaction. That said I can always add a quick text note on screen during the opening cinematic.
With the floating arms..no idea why. Probably the use of cameras has caused this. Not sure how to fix and as it's not gameplay affecting I probably won't worry too much about it.
I can tell one thing for sure: You definitely cannot influence this without mutators or stuff like that. It's in fact UT3's fault, you can try it with all playermodels that should have hands in 1st person when holding a weapon. When you have weapons disabled at start in your level, you will run across this issue again and see "floating" hand models where your feet should be.
Yo, I did just read your post at epics forum. I don't have UT3DOM installed but was able to pick up the enforcer anyway... so I wonder if this is really a requirement? Or is this the reason for the floating arms?
The actual component required is the UTmultiteam component of DOM (UTmultiteam.u & .pkg in the install\CookedPC dir). I assumed it only came with that but maybe it was part of UT3 itself? The reason why that's required is that the Enforcer pickup itself is from that mod.
That's strange. All I have is a fresh UT3 install with patch 2.1 and titan pack, nothing more. The files you mentioned are not present on my hdd but the enfrorcer pickup did work for me.
Perhaps someone else can give it a try?

Awesome work, I had the whole floating arms thing happening too, but overall a fantastic remake. I really enjoyed playing this. I think it would be cool if you got to open the hatch to end of the level. Cant wait to see what you do with the next level where you go outside and discover the hut and the crashed spacecraft etc.
This is just such a beautiful remake of the old one, that I'm kinda in love with it. There are so many memories about this on my mind and it is always a fabulous pleasure to remember or get reminded of it. Makes a lot of fun to play this map, because it is like coming home somehow and home sweet home! I personally can't wait for your next remake!
I've updated the 1st post with a PS3 cook of this! PS3 folk, please be aware that this cook is untested! (I don't own UT3 for the PS3) Also I have no idea what the default 'use' button is on the PS3..
