A mate and I both picked up the new Need for Speed game last night!

Verdict:  Damn good fun!! beer.gifbeer.gifbeer.gif

Made by Criterion so yes it's very Burnout'ish but it has all the NFS flare you've come to expect!

Gfx are pretty sweet, driving model is arcady(so sim fans may not approve) and the AI seems OK!

The downfalls: no manual shiftin...can't think of much else apart from that

The good parts:  Everything else
The gooder parts: Multiplayer is a blast!  I've spent pretty much all my time playing against my Mate!
It has the usual race mode and 2 'cops and racers' modes where you have to have atleast 1 cop and 1 racer. eg.. meaning you can have 1 racer and 7 cops or 7 racers and 1 cop etc...
The racer then has to either take out the cop or get away from them and both have 4 different 'weapons' to create some havok on the roads.  We were dropping spike strips in front of each other, watching ourselves veer all over the road to avoid it.  So yeah MP is a hell of a lotta fun!

ANother good thing is the 'Autolog' component that gives you updates of how ya friends are doing in the game so it allows you to see their race/event times so you can beat'em and rub it in when they next log in! biggrin

I haven't played single player much but apparently the cop side of the game is quite good, so I look forward to indulging in some more tonight!

All in all it's a good change from playing FPS games online!

If yaz get it add "Lord_Porksword" as a friend.

My M8 hadn't tried his wheel(thrustmaster) and I've checked the forums and wheel support seems limited atm.
Fortunately the devs are working on a patch to include Logitech wheel support, so hopefully you have a wheel setup that will be supported!

EDIT:  Looks like a few peeps are having issues so there's a lot of rage going on over in their forums.  The game runs perfect for me and my M8, but apparently there may be issues with older quad core hardware, but my M8 is running a Q9400 system which is apparently 'older hardware'.

My only other gripe with the game is no ingame lobby chat for multiplayer.  I'd love to raz up the other racers by talking some sh1t just before tha race. biggrin

Ah dude this is such good news!

I was just telling DW, & son & other peeps on the lan that we should get this, see back in the day we played the first NFS Hot Pursuit and it was a blast, in fact around 8-10 years ago on weekends when we'd gear up for our 'LAN' gaming sessions of the Original StarCraft or UT99 we'd always warm up with some driving games, NFS & a game called Speed Busters (both had top notch multiplayer / lan functionality) My biggest turn off on games lately has been all the nonsense with DRM or other garbage; namely lack of good LAN function - it used to be standard for a few years and i feel it still should be, i haven't bought SCII and i have no intention to because of my connection situation, i don't have the bandwidth to deal with it, they should and could activate or authenticate (even have an option to do it by phone like the Operating System companies have the sense to allow, for peeps in rural areas, - there are lots across the USA) i'm all for that then leave me to my LAN.

Any way thanks for the heads up LPS, i'll be picking this one up asap. thumbsup.gif

P.S. I wonder how many people don't even realize that there was an older original of this, it was actually the 3rd (or possibly 4th) NFS installment i believe and one of the first to suppord the new 3D graphics via Directx / OGL, & possibly even Glide. wink

Things have sure come a long long way.

Unfortunately there's no LAN play 1X. :(

Regarding older dual hardware I'm not sure. I definately know that Quad was mentioned as they were commenting about disabling 1-2 cores.
TBH I wonder if half the people on the NFS forums bother to update OTHER drivers in addition to their gfx drivers...

NFS has always been a bit of prestige amongst the crowd of driving games on the PC. I think 1X was right about NFS3 could be run using Glide for the 3DFX(pre-Nvidia) hardware. That brings back memories....My first 3D card was a Canopus Pure 3D with 2meg of framebuffer memory and 4meg of texture memory!

Let us know what yaz think about the game.

I have play a bit the solo part, my first impression is that i'm a bit disapointed.

I have found the driving really TOO Arcade, I mean there is no really interest to use a wheel (damn because it support my wheel lol )
It make no doubt that this is the guy of Burnout how have make the game after 5 sec of play !

a part the driving aspect (and it's a big part for me !),
the game is really well optimised, with all setting high and a resolution of 1920*1080, no lag
and the cars and environements are really well designed.

concerning the gameplay

the possibility to be the cops or the bad guys is intersting,
but I have found the the effect of speed not really impressive, and I don't speak about the nitro effect, where is ??!!

I need to play more to have a better impression but my feeling is "gray" actually (not bad, not good)...

cant say it with better words!
a lil less arcade than burnout but the crashes were really more eyecandy in burnout

i hate to crash my car at 200km/h in a small fence without damaging the fence

....+ i had some very weird bugs lol at some places while playing with the police opponents:a giant hole appears & my car is fallen two times via the holes through the map falling with no end and crashing the game

...rofl no luck with car games! only my ut3 is stable like a 747...uncredible :p

As the game was being developed by Criterion I expected that it'd be quite arcady with the driving model.

With the gfx I noticed that I'm not getting any motion blur (which I suspect all PC users are having) so I do wonder if there's other effect's missing.... Here's hoping that Criterion will address this with the first patch.

Apparently someone on the official forums posed(or actually was) as a gaming magazine rep and emailed Criterion about the lack of chat availability within the race lobby. Criterion responded that they didn't bother with adding chat functionality as PC users will find other methods!
I find this attitude quite concerning and it has put a dent in my faith in Criterion. The lack of ingame chat will fragment the community and will kill this game......

I hold out to see what the first patch addresses.

Problems aside I still believe the game is a hell of a lotta fun!! beer.gif  (I know this cuz I keep getting told off by my wife for making too much noise while I'm playing! cynic.gif )

On a side note...the EA forums for NFS are the slowest and sh1ttiest forums ever. I posted 2 comments..eventually none of them appeared..then 2 days later I get the email to say peeps have responded...but my post never even made it into the thread...wtf.....

Dang thats disappointing .. good thing i asked specifically about LAN. (appreciate the heaps-up Lord) If that's the case i might have to skip this one as well then, i'm not into games across the net <bandwidth limitations are a big reason> like i am games across my LAN.

Wow amazing funny little story about what a small world this really is LPS; Canopus Pure 3D, - funny thing after obtaining permission i drove right to Canopus in San Jose (it was either there or Sunnyvale Ca those towns are literally on top of each other) back when i lived in Cali (I've only been in Nevada 5 years, my IP says Idaho, but thats because i'm on satellite, i really am in Northern Nevada) and picked on up directly from their headquarters, i remember the guy bringing it to me at the door, (it almost feels like a dream now thinking back, i just asked DW if she remembers as well and she does .. lol) at that point i had my PC consulting business running strong (so i was always testing cutting edge hardware)

The other main card was called a Diamond Monster 3D, <& included a nice bundle of 3d capable games> - these guys almost put Matrox out of business .. but the Canopus offered a superior product and included a nice (working) TV out option and such. This is certainly epic because its not like anyone could ever drive directly to Intel and purchase a processor or what not even if they had a consulting business and tested lots of new hardware it would be a stretch, anyway you've brought back some good memories for me also my Aussie friend.

Ahh the good 'ol Diamond Monster 3D. Never had one myself, but my fellow gamers (who actually had a job at the time) were using them.

Once I tired of my Pure 3D I moved onto bigger fish and got a Creative Voodo2 card. They were the bees knees at the time. These were the first cards ever to SLi if I remember correctly. ...although I never had enough money to buy a 2nd card.. Soon after that Nvidia hit the market with their first TNT card if I recall correctly. It was cheaper, by a lot, yet produced much better vivid colours at faster framerates.
After that the Voodo3's n 5's came out but noones likes to talk much about them as companies like Nvidia were on par tech wise at a cheaper price. Eventually after the failing of the Voodoo5 series 3DFX went bankrupt and Nvidia brought them out.

The first '3D enhanced' game I played was Monster Truck Madness. The glory of bilinear filtering was amazing compared to any gfx before it. shocked.gif I still believe that the event of 3D hardware marked the demise of the popularity of Arcade games. After I got my first 3D card the gfx on my PC were better than any Arcade game and I stopped spending my money on them....

After playing more the solo campaign, I must say that I prefer the cop part to the bad guy part lol

To be more clear, it's more easy for me and my wheel to obtain success on the cop mission...

But each time it's come to obtain just the better time on a track, I almost finish at the best to the silver rank, and it's a pitty for me as I think I'm not a bad game driver (I take part to the best drivers in the world on the DIRT2, I've got the 6° world time record on a mexican track and some others on the 10 firsts...)

So I really need to buy a pad to see if it's more easy to play this game...
