GF300 (380gtx etc..) would be the card name hower the cards are based around a GPU that has different naming standard. eg..
GF8000 series - was based on the G80 chip
GF9000 series - was based on the G92, G94, G96 and G98(b) chips.
GF2xx series - was based on GT200(b) chip

true but sometimes u need to take care on new products:

for example the 250gts is "the same card as the 9800gtx+ : same g92+ and....same 3d mark results and if i remember well the 8800gts was a g92 too ;)

dunno why nvidia play with names like that!....i have an idea though

We're getting mighty tired of Nvidia's renaming game and the latest card to get a new name is the Geforce 9800 GTX+ which will be getting its name changed to Geforce GTS 250. It seems like the only difference between the two will be a new BIOS which Nvidia will be sending out to its customers in time for mass production.

This "new" card is expected to make an appearance during CeBIT when Nvidia is set to unveil it. Although it's not really much of a product announcement now, is it? Expreview is also suggesting that the good old Geforce 8800GT (also known as the Geforce 9800GT) will get a name change to Geforce GTS 240 at the same time.

We're not sure how long Nvidia is going to keep playing this game, but it doesn't look like the company is ready to release anything new for now. Sure, we're aware of the current economic climate and the fact that Nvidia haven't been doing too ['wellas of recently, but this is just getting plain silly now. Sure, people expect newproducts every six months from the graphics card companies, but this is their ownfault as at the height of the battle between Nvidia and ATI, this was how thingswere done. Now it seems like both companies have slowed down and prefer to playthe renaming game instead of making new cards.

Just remember the main rule of GFX cards. The latest gen mid range cards will perform around or just below the previous gen high end cards! ...unless there's a big jump in technology on the current gen chips.
This rule only applies to single GPU cards though.

So if you wanna get a big performance increases, either get two slower cards or get a high end card.

I think I just get one high end card then just buying two mid or just below high end range.

This is one of the reason I prefer ATI over NVidia since few GPU generations. At least ATI don't play naming game & when they release a "new" product, it is a "new" product, not a repackage chip & ATI chips are also cheaper & delever the same performance (generally speaking because they have both threre weak / stong points) as NVidia.

I've own over the years almost all NVidia GPU generations going back to the TNT days. I own
a TNT, TNT2, GF256, GF2, GF3 GTS, GF4 MX, GF6200, GF8800 GT, GF9800 GT.

Since the G80, not much improvements as been done. The new generations are indeed better but not that better & they also have some drivers problem as ATI.

So my point is I'll stick with ATI for a long time & wait for a "real" improvements from NVidia before I'll buy again a green team GPU.

no revolution between a G80 and a G92+ for sure but a 9800GTX+ have nothing comparable to a 8800gts 320 first generation ....except that they are both huge and heavy like steel :p
i follow nvidia products but always one generation late so i grab lethal prices and as you said the difference between two series isnt so huge !

26th March my friends! beer.gif
Apparently nvidia are doing the official unveiling of the GTX 480 and GTX 470 on the 26th March during PAX 2010.

We'll probably hear from many angry Radeon fanboys on the web that day as I'd bet that nvidia will probably top the Radeon 5000s.

Sounds pretty sweet. So far ati has trumped nvidia on and off for years but now it is nvidia's turn! I don't have a preference and I don't side with either company but I would rather nvidia have better cards because then I can have a good card and play games in 3d.

Lord I know you will want to get these new cards. You seem to have the best rig (By far I might add)

I'd like to see how they run but alas a probably won't get one cuz I spec'd up my rig last time to last me a couple of years. (a promise to tha wife that I'd stop my yearly upgrade cycle aww )

You're a good husband Lord. Besides saying you wont upgrade every year gives you an excuse to put it to the max one year, but wait few and do it again.

Also, I will be upgrading my cpu. With my bad computer a new graphics card might not help as much as a new cpu and a cpu wont make me upgrade my psu.

What would you guys recommend I get for my budget. It needs to require 350 watt psu or less. I don't require it be a specific brand, amd or intel are both fine as long as it's affordable.

I'm looking for something between 100-150 U.S. dollers with a 200 doller max. But preferably 100-150 dollers

This would be about 70-120 euros (Rounded up) and 110-200 australian currency (Rounded way up here)

I' not as tech savy as many of you guys and thought you could share your opinions on good cards. The type of socket isn't too important but it would also help if you could give a few cards of different sockets just to be safe.

I decided not to upgrade my rig at all. If I wanted a new GPU I would need a new PCU, and to take advantage of the gpu fully I would need a new cpu. Since I bought a PC instead of building myself I am limited to what I can upgrade. I'm better off waiting for a new computer altogether.

I instead bought levels 1 through 3 of Latin America Spanish. Where I live I wont find any managerial work unless I can speak the language everyone knows. Despite being in america I feel like white guys are an endangered species in my neighborhood. biggrin

Note: if anyone is interested, levels Rosetta Stone is extremely expensive (250 U.S. dollars per level, five levels in all)  I heard it is extremely convenient for learning a new language, so I am trying 3 of the first 5 levels first. If I find Rosetta Stone helpful then in a few years I might pick up french so I can chat with some of you guys. (probably not)

Reviews n Benchmarks are now starting to appear across tha web for the 470 n 480gtx cards.
Looks like they're about 20% quicker in some cases than the equalivent ATi card in all but the hightest resolutions.  It'll be interesting to see how they perform after the next driver set is released.

The 480 seems decent enough but I think a 5970 is still a better option. Even dual 4870s are on par with the new Nvidia cards and those cards are really cheap. I think If Nvidia gets a competetive price on the new cards they will be a great deal but otherwise it probably isn't worth it.

Eitherway, thanks for all the info Lord!

Take some screenshots of Artica with framerates for me. aww

Apparently there's been a recent price drop for all Nvidia 400 based cards. When you buy one make sure it's after that price drop! biggrin
The MSY prices here haven't dropped yet so their probably offloading old stock still!...or ripping us off... wink

I think it was around 20% faster but I don't know bout the power consumption or heat.
I'd like to think they've reduced both to make the card a more attractive buy, but the big question is the Dollar amount for it...

i heared the 580GTX is 30% more powerfull but the new "vapor" cooling is the real improovment as the 480GTX was very noisy; here u can find it for 470€

@mick: yeah, dunno if it s me only but till theses last weeks i was 100% nvidia...my eyes slowly are turning on the ATI side here too....some price/efficience balances are clearly leaded bu ATI
lets see how thoses 6xxx gfx performs
anyway i think i ll not change mines for years, havent succed to find a limit for now
do u know that u can use the GFX chipset of ur mobo for the physx? i recently discovered that my nforce980a gave me exact same fluid performances than having a 9800GTX dedicaced for that...lol...not the same power consumption of course(i tryed it with the nforce750a on the second PC (8800gt/SLI) and it work too smile.gif

You'd like to be here in Oz.

Nvidia Geforces here are cheap thanks to our bloody high dollar.

You can pick up a GTX 275 for like $298.95.

GTX 460 1GB for $320 Woo nut tow of those together.

GTS 450? Just saw one on the net.

What is it like a GTX 260 or something.

The Gigabyte 450 seems ok these cheap mid range card seem alright if don't need to spend so much.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gts-450-review-roundup/8

After reading the review the Nvidia sent this card out very late 1 year lol to take on the ATI 5750 & 5770.

If ya have tha cash go for something a bit quikker than a 450 I reckon.
Personally I'd got for a Dx11 card, however Bl!tz makes sence that you can pickup very fast Dx10 cards cheap since the new cards hit the market.
Also wait until the new Radeons hit the shelves as they'll probably set off another price drop in the current crop.

It's a shame you don't have a MSY near ya cuz checkout their price list.  MSY

Edit:  LOL... MSY already have the 6870's on their list,  and they're quite cheap...wtf

mick is right ,good idea to wait the next radeons

about the DX choice i m more reserved;i bought an overpriced GFX only one time in my life and it was a MSI NX8800GTS-320 around 300Euros because DX10 was just born and because someone told me that DX10 was a GREAT improovement to DX9....6 month later the GFX was under 120€( no way to sold it for decent price; the overpricing was clearly related to the "brand new DX")
..i though DX10 will change a lot my UT3;since that i tryed UT3 on DX9 and honnestly the GFX settings do more changes than the famous DX...
...+ last point there was a lot of bugs related to DX 10 games and it was rainning betas & whql drivers from nvidia during 6 month :p

to give u an idea about sli; sebs actual gfx is a MSI 9800GTX+-OC(the same that i had):
2 x 9800GTX/OC in SLI=one MSI 285GTX/OC(the sli wins on 3d mark by 100 lil points and the 285 is more homogen in UT3 FPS rendering)
2 x 285GTXin sli=480GTX approximativly
1.5 x 480GTX=580GTX "(not exactly x2 here,not enough improoved!)

last point is that ATI gfx are really nice too, i havent test but it seem that ATI is on the good way, for each nvidia u can find a ATI with quite same specs, was always a lil step under but since some month they are slaping nvidia on the pure performances!
some models u must command & wait so they are popular...and the prices finally are not as cheap as expected...imho

thx for your advises guys !

regarding to the dx11 support, it's probably not a big jump to eye candy but I think the games who are dev now take advantage of it for the render of some stuffs, but the cost of such card give me a stop lol
So I will think about that (especially go with 2x 9800gtx in SLI )

Biggest advantage for Dx11, eye candy wise, is tessellation. Tessellation makes a huge difference visually.  Admittidly that's why I want to get some Dx11 cards. aww

Here's a nice youtube clip showing the effect.
I can pickup 2 460's for under $450 (minus what I sell my 275's for) here so it's a very tempting xmas pressie. wink

Good thing as well is that a few games now are already using the Dx11 tech in them...unlike the very few that utilized dx10 when it came out...

yeah it s a good model; imo one of the best existant 460:nice cooling :D...& nice price

sure better than a 9800gtx+; with all new features...less powerfull than a sli of 9800gtx but thousand times easier to sold in two years wink.gif

u can sold your 9800gtx+ for around 70 euros on ebay (can take 4 weeks ..haha^^)

imo no sli possible between thoses two; the model should be identical (processor model:ex g80 x2 or g92 x2))....only way to use ur 9800gtx if u dont want to sold it is to dedicace it for physX...lil overpowered for that though (a 9600 and even less powerfull do the job aswell)

@mick: wow i ll be impressed if u get so much money as u expect when u sold ur 275's
lot cheaper if second hand here....150 for each is nice here...i bought my 2nd 285gtx superpipe for 100 euros( was a tactical deal ok but the guy wanted first around 150 euros....not sold in delay and a proposition from me 1 month later:p)
i m gonna come to sold my gfx in australia haha wink.gif

he he, yes I will think of that cause my cash is really limited actually...that's why I have to think to your proposition too !

you're right

I've got an old sapphire x800xl somewhere, does it could make the job for physX ?

thx eric ;)

I've managed to get approval from the boss(wife) to upgrade my gfx cards this xmas. I've already have a buyer for one of my 275's! biggrin

I've done a heap of research and there's two great solutions out atm.

Nvidia 460gtx 1Gig SLi
AMD Radeon 6850 1Gig Crossfire

Here's some FYI on what I've found so far:

Prices for both are pretty much the same with both setups costing about $440 Australian!

Both setups are 20-35% faster than a 480gtx, roughly around the speeds of a single 580/5970, and are about $80+ cheaper than a 480 $150+ cheaper than a 580.

The 460's win on synthetic benchmarks but the 6850's win on game performance in most cases.
I suspect that Nvidia may have the upper hand on Tessellation processing so it will be interesting to see in the future when Tessellation is used a lot more heavily, and when physx is also used.

Dual card scaling is quite impressive on both. AMD have tweaked the 6000 series and they scale a hell of a lot better than the 5000 cards.

The 460's run cooler but the 6850's use less power. Both cards overclock nicely!

AMD now have 3D in the 6xxx cards and as usual Nvidia have CUDA and Physx.

I'm still tempted to go for the 460's as Nvidia are far superior at writing drivers for their hardware, plus the physx support may come in handy in the future. ..plus I'm a bit of a fanboy! aww
That said I can't deny the benchmarks for the 6850 CF setup which is definately grabbing my attention! Some 6850CF benches are killing the 580 and even the 5970! shocked.gif

The verdict....wait until the AMD 69xx cards hit the market (Dec 13th) and the other Nvidia 5xx cards (hopefully soon).
I'm keen on seeing the 570 and 69xx cards and also interesting in seeing how they affect the prices of the current cards.  Whatever happens I'll get the replacement cards just before xmas. (as a good holiday treat) beer.gif

Anyone who wants to get a single card solution for a cheap price, the 6850's seem like a good deal! thumbsup.gif

FYI - A couple of Benches for yaz.

Unfortunately it does appear that your Mobo doesn't support SLi!
Therefore I'd very highly recommend you go with the 6850 crossfire solution M8!
If you can afford it, it'll cost around $100 more, over the 470 but it'll be a hell of a lot quikker M8!
I'm very seriously thinking about a pair of 6850's myself, but I'll wait til mid Dec to see what the new cards are like!

Take a look to that :

I don't know what think of that, but it seem there is effectively a lot of "comunication" and "marketing" behind all that no ?!
