After some discussions with other mates, I think it will be very interesting to have your point of view about the "strategic" aspect of your gaming and your way of play on a DM.
I mean, I would know what kind of strategies leads your decisions when you enter on a DM.
For example : When you enter on the map, you run first on weapons, armors, vial etc...?
You try to kill each time you have the occasion or you prefer to be full armored and health before engage an attack?
Your goal is to stay alive like if your real life was involve in the game or you don't care about die?
You set you headcount to min or you prefer have massive carnage ?
What is the source of fun during playing for you?
etc...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is your preferred weapon ? (feel free to edit this post)
i try to find the best way to collect important items and than it s like a race ; lap 1...lap2...lap3....than i kill (or i try to do so) all long but only thoses who are on my way...i dont change my destination each time i meet an opponent and i never follow him....my main objective is to be full of health and more(armors & and bonus health)
doing so u "learn" the map and u run faster and faster around the map and u can find better ways to collect items (extra ways like wall dodging): this is what i call "timing"...normally it always exist an optimal way to collect all and experience push u on that target....
that drives to another important point : when u know a map perfectly u dont play it same way as first times....and i m sure that if we had to provide feedback on a specific map it will be different one on first match and atfer 200 fights
from time to time i have "bloodbath" matches too with 20 opponents or more ; it s fun and good for reflex shots & aim trainning but it drives a lot of bad things to the game: rocket & stinger spam ; confusion; luck and hasard....no fun for me ...except in instagib mode; because this gametype rebalance the game
no real rules on anything and all peeps find the best way to have fun n frags...
I load the map with the playercount recommended, in flyby, I fool around, spot all valuable pickups first (powerups, armors, keg) & then the basic stuff (weapons, health).
When I play, I use different paths to collect the goodies & I try to kill everyone on my way. I don't follow others or change the path I first thought to use. My goal is to try to be as full of health / armor as possible at all time.
I prefer a limited number of players. I'm not a fan of fragfeast. Like in RL, I like to win because I play well, work hard, not just by luck or hazard.
Also, by playing with a number of players that is higher then the recommended number the author as suggested, the gameplay get unbalanced because the map get to crowded & health / ammos, etc asn't been designed for higher player counts.
For sure, there isn't any official rules, it's a personal way of playing.

first source of fun for me is to demolish opponents with shock combos while using Zaxe because it produce a big "bang" and is a one shot frag....imo it s the more difficult shot too...technically ....and i always rush on shock ammos wich are an important "place" on my way for that the map need ZAxe orientation; fiting gravity and good item placement
i only have fun in balanced matches with or without humans, athmosphere of the map is essential as all my settings are on minimal mode(visuals comes on second hand but arent essentials to me)
i have lot of fun to win too but i prefer a balanced DM than humungus victories on underskilled opponents
with bots the botpathing is essential and show the way to stupid bots; a good botpathing allow u to play lower skilled bots wich is more "relax"
i must admitt that i play often with one opponent online on all maps and we addapt our gameplay to the place....the result is often in a "halo" style (more slow and sniper oriented)....very fun and more relaxing than any other fight with "clasical ut rules"...good for and with old farts :p

I mainly play Instagib lately, played a lot of weapons year before, i'm a huge fan of both.
I think with weapons controlling the power-ups is essential, i use rockets for ranged always fire at their feet and flak for up close, other weapons all have special uses and tactics to take advantage of, i'm not much of a sniper because i usually play CTF and have always played offense or freelance so i never have time to lay down the cover fire.
With instagib here's a little trick you guys may not know, you can use the walls for protection if you get right up against a wall it makes you harder to hit sometimes, can you guys imagine playing that little arena CTF-AndAction! map on instagib against 5 bots with 5 humans on the inhuman setting? we do this all the time and never lose, you can't set the bots to skill level 8 / godlike or they spawn kill and never miss at all on IG, we've tried.
The dodge feature of the UT series is one of its neatest enhancements IMO, not matter if DM, CTF, weaps, or IG, you can dodge and throw yourself sideway to get to where you are going faster, one of the keys to victory IMO.

Your welcome, more we are, better info we'll get, thx to be part of this discussion ;)
Another common point we are you and me, is the use of the RL and the Flak, with a little difference I love use secondary fire of the flak for middle range, it's give me a lot of fun !
By reading all this post, it's really interesting to see how we play differently.
I hope other member will take part of us and post their way to play.
Indeed Flak alt fire is effective as well for ranged especially ambush, if i'm going face to face i prefer the speed of the rockets it's the only weapon that i have beaten the bots with on godlike!
We usually would play Shangrila on lan for a warm-up map and hold the choke point near the lifts and shield belt and could beat the bots on godlike weapons, (90% of kills from rockets fired at enemies feet) impossible though on instagib - they never miss on godlike.
If you play with a team of humans vs. AI you need to pretty much plan to rally at a good choke point somewhere on said map. That much is actually a good tactic for any match even vs humans, i actually prefer TDM to DM because we usually have a group on our lan, some even bring their PC's over, we have one dude that leave a PC here at my house (all the time) lol

Ok, so I will try to explain how I play and what is fun for me.
First, I must say I never play online. by the past on ut2k4 I have done some multiplayer DM in lan party, was a lot of fun ;)
my style of playing is hardcore (I not mean I'm a good player, I mean I love blood lol)
From time to time I play in duel (with skill bot level 6), it's Bl!tz who have gave me the desir to play in duel, I have discover a new way of playing and fun since some month ;)
But I prefer spread blood and fast action rather than slow and boring run after 4-6 bots on a DM. I usually play in the skill level 4 when I want have the best fun and blood bath with the max player count lol. I can win on the uper level, until 6, but I found that too much boring after a wile. It's probably because my style is not strategic, I mean, I try to make the 2 things in the same time : make the maximum kill (to obtain reward like ultrakill or monsterkill, that is really motivate me and give me the most part of the fun in that game lol) and get the maximum of the health, armor and powerups. (powerup aren't my priority). So I have like you a kind of circuit on the map to collect the items but I easily break this circuit to follow a bot or to go on a place where I can make a carnage.
The other part who make me have fun is fight on tight place with the flak and it's alt fire, because when you are at the good distance of the enemy (not to close, not too far) you can kill it in one shot and have a big spread of blood and gibs and it's really funny for me lol.
I must say the real addiction to that game become from announcement reward, I cannot say why but I'm addict to monsterkill, rampage, unstoppable and other ones. That's why I take particularly attention to the stinger sound on every map I create, because sound are one of the source of my addiction and fun to that game.
Anyway Bl!tz and 1x you are some best player here, I'm impressed and it would be cool to have some video from you in action ;)
PS : sorry if it's a bit confuse, It's really hard to me when I have to explain in english my though ;)

- Lan play / Lan parties area blast (even mini Lans with 5 or 6 people)
From time to time I play in duel (with skill bot level 6), it's Bl!tz who have gave me the desir to play in duel, I have discover a new way of playing and fun since some month ;)
- Awesome 1 vs 1 is also a blast try with level 7, then eventually 8 with weapons, you can beat them on that setting but only certain maps, trust me on that.

That's why I take particularly attention to the stinger sound on every map I create, because sound are one of the source of my addiction and fun to that game.
- I know the feeling bro this is why i love instagib, 1 time recently i made it to unstoppable on skill setting of 7 CTF-Andaction! 4 humans vs 4 bots, you have to strafe, circle strafe and then strafe some more very fastly and use the walls for protection, (to survive) i also design the map so i have an advantage to know the spawn points, but i run big cover firepower for my team with out me playing this position we couldn't beat the inhuman bots especially in insta. I'm a long time player i've spent many hours doing drills with teams of people and alone, we used to practice running backwards entirely through an emty map back in UT99, there are many many tricks i still retain from our clan wars when we were the #1 team at the onlinegamingleague.com and proovinggrounds.com
Anyway Bl!tz and 1x you are some best player here, I'm impressed and it would be cool to have some video from you in action ;)
-Connection means everything in Instagib (high ping could cripple the best of players) this is why i'm stuck to playing lan most of the time, not enough populated servers, or at least i haven't been looking, i got back into UT3 to do the campaign on LAN believe it or not.Believe it or not the best i ever was, was years back with a logitech gaming ball mouse (heavier ball) far far more accurate and smooth for IG than the best high DPI laser mouse. Dude there was a time when i could pick any shot i wanted and make it consistently.
I'm going to record some video's when we do one of our coming lan's hopefully it doesn't bog me down.
I hope i don't sound like i'm bragging when i mention our clan being #1 (instagib CTF) its absolutely a true story, i have no reason deceive anyone and nothing to prove, i just have lots of very neat memories i like to share. It's very good to be back and here with you guys.
Nova your English skills are solid dude (and improving all the time) nothing confusing at all in your post.

I'm glad Seb made a thread for this, seeing as we have not seen any other Farts play before (With a few exceptions.
I am the run and gun type. I find the nearest weapon, run down corridors, and take people down in close quarters. I am best in cramped spaces with much platforming involved. (this is most of my inspiration for WaveRider) As I attack a foe I run circles around them, jump a bunch, swerve, and make it as hard to hit me as possible. I spend half of a DM match in mid air.
I have multiple weapons of choice.
-For close quarters I try to find the flak cannon. It is very versatile because it has two completely different firing modes with two completely different projectiles. The opposite of the RL which just adds more rockets to your shot.
-For both close quarters and large areas I and a demon with the sniper rifle. Headshot! In most games I do not use sniper rifles because you need to use the scope, But in UT there is a crosshair which makes it a worthy close quarters weapon.
My final choice for wide open areas is the RL. I choose this weapon for one reason and one reason only. Homing missiles! In wide open fields there is no escape!!! I am also very fond of the normal and shock rifles for wide open areas.
For my favorite weapon you can put me down for the sniper rifle because I can efficiently use it in any situation.
Now, Lets talk strategy. As I previously stated I am the run and gun type. I usually don't ambush unless I spot before being spotted. I am good at evading close range weapons because I move so much. Every 2 seconds I will change directions for less than 1/4th of a second just to see if anyone is following me. I am a control freak and if I don't know where someone is I am very cautious. I will do this all of the time unless I am occupied shooting someone. I prefer DM on areas that are good for few players. This is because I like the one on one aspect of small fights. And it is also because my computer sometimes laggs while playing karge Dm or VCTF maps. I will usually play bots unless I have friends to play with online. I never play against bots below adept difficulty. Unless I am playing a lot of bots (10 and up) I will try to play on god-like. I am a tough gamer who takes it very seriously. All I have stated in past few sentences about bots and DM is true for almsot all games I play.
At the beginning of a match I run and find the closest weapon. (besides biorifle as I am better with the enforcer) I normally don't armor up or get power-ups even at low health. Unless I have under 30 or 20 hp I will not bother healing. Although I never heal or armor up and am very cautious. I hate dieing more than I enjoy killing an enemy. I try for at least 1.0 or higher kill death ratio.
My source of fun is a competitive drive. I love to crush the hopes and dreams of all I have defeated. OK, that may have been a little exaggerated ;) I enjoy winning but I enjoy mapping even more.
I hope I answered all of the questions (And some extra)
P.S. Next time I see you guys on X-Fire I may invite you to a game. I would like to see how you guys play. Then again I don't really have time for a while so don't expect me to invite ya!
Peace!

I wanted to put this in my post but for some reason I can't edit it. I wanted to mention that I earned the steam achievement for beating a Godlike bot in a 20 kill 1 on 1 DM without dieing once. My greatest achievement! hahaha I'm still happy. I got the achievemnet last month but I'm still giddy with joy!
Anyways I rambling so I'll stop haunting the forums now. Peace!

beating a Godlike bot in a 20 kill 1 on 1 DM without dieing once , crazy dude !
In a way I kind of cheated. I went in a DM match. I can't think of the name of the map. It's the one with the buildings and the stalker (At least I think that's what it's called. It's the vehicle with the tenticles and is gigantic with lots of health) I hid from the bot and timed it right. I got into the vehicle and just killed em 20 times. My record is 7 kills without vehicles and without dieing once against Godlike.
Seb, You also said "PS : sorry if it's a bit confuse, It's really hard to me when I have to explain in english my though ;)"
I only speak english with a little spanish and I can understand your posts very well. No problems with your posts at all!

Reading others post, it look like I'm the lowest skilled of the old fart gang ! I play at level 5 I think (the skilled level) because the other one above (adept I think) is a little to tough for me & bring more frustration than fun !
Anyway, it doesn't surprise me that I'm the uncle of the bunch LOL :D
And Seb, you make your point very clear mon cousin ;) My English is like yours & I think others understand what we meant :)

You're not alone, more I up on the skill level bot, more I'm frustrated lol And I hate be frustrated when I play, because there are too much thing to frustrate you on the RL to feel that in game !
Cool if you all understand me, I think I know that, it's just sometime it's a hard stuff to write in another language ;)

That makes me feel better, i'm with Nova, just about manage adept with the bots but i also find it a bit stressful to enjoy. Oh, and at almost 55 years old i wish to lay claim to the oldest fart title :)
