Nothing for me to mess around with.

A 19$ subscription per month (even if it can be aborted - which still allows usage but doesn't allow updates) is not worth it for me considering how many changes were made and how long one would have to get used to it first. If I could give it a try without having to pay for it first, I would think about it twice (not to mention except for my processor, I'm below the recommended specs - especially my RAM as I have only 4 and not 8GB, makes no sense using it with very poor fps even if I could use it at all).

Though I admit, the 5% of the income is certainly much fairer than the UE3 license (but UE3 still doesn't look outdated imo).

Yeah, very much a shame that we can't dabble around in it for free.
I'd download it now to have a play around but no such luck. I can understand Epic need to make money off their new engine but to sacrifice the ability for up comming modders and game designers to get their feet wet seems to go against their respected history of supporting the modding community. With Cryengine looking better and better these days we may see the modding community make a shift towards their engine.

EDIT:  Apparently you can get around the monthly fee by paying once and downloading the software.  Then you cancel your subscription and you are then still allowed to use Unreal Engine forever but won't get any updates unless you subscribe again.  Even I'll have to admit that $20 to have full access to the latest game engine is not too bad.

Yeah, just what I mentioned.
The 5% fee for commercial products is a pretty neat contract compared to the UE3 though!
If I intended to start something on UE4, I'd surely be pleased about that.

I was somewhat surprised about the monthly subscription, too. But then again you'll get full source acess, something that was never possible with the UE3 UDK. Of course this is less important for those who do level design, mods or just wanna toy around, but it's there. Maybe they'll add another type of license in the future. Or you'll need to wait for the first UE4 title that ships with an editor :)

their pov is that if it s for fun u can still use udk or ue3....if it s commercial and not too advanced u better change for ue4....Hawken devs will appreciate to use an "outdated" tool on an unfinished game +.+

Unreal Engine 4 for everyone?! Sounds awesome as hell, but these 19$ subscription per month...oh well. However, I like to have an interface to a certain game GUI, called Unreal or Unreal Tournament. That would be awesome! I love Unreal Engine, but I love the Unreal franchise even more. Hopefully there will ever be one, otherwise I'm gonna explode or gonna blow **** up!

Still, if I had the time I would like the idea of doing stuff in the Unreal Engine again. I mean, I did some stuff back in the old days of UT2004, but nothing in Unreal Engine 3 nor 4. I just love wireframes! ;D

Bad news then: www.computerandvideogames.com/454760/no-unreal-tournament-games-in-the-works-says-epic-boss/
It was to be expected actually, but I'm curious about the results of UE4 anyway.

Honestly I will give credit to Epic for the new pricing strategy. $19 once off payment gets you full access to the current version available of UE4 which you can then use legally after cancelling your subscription...then later on pay another $19 down the track to get an updated version if you want it.
If you decide to make money off it then 5% is actually a good deal. Better than the 25% that it was for UDK.

I plan to get UE4 some time soonish to have a play around in. My ultimate goal is to get an Oculus Rift and as UE4 supports it there will be fun times ahead. I'm looking very much forward to making maps and then running around inside them with the Oculus. Especially maps like my Amytis map. Use some of the models that Malk and others have created mixed with some bsp will be a lot of fun.

Yeah,  it's a shame Epic is letting the Unreal franchise fall to the wayside.  I was hoping that Cliffy B would be contracted out to work on an Unreal based game but who knows.  I'm aware that Cliffy was working on some kind of tournament game so it'll be interesting to see what eventuates from that.  Maybe that'll be the next 'UT' which level designer could map for and if not...maybe we could make our own death matching game in UE4! wink

I was going to pay those 19€ the other day but for now epic only offers payment via credit cards which is a shame, no paypal so far.

Now that "no UT" is confirmed maybe some indi team gets their hand on a similar FPS game wink

Yeah, finally an official statement - how long we waited for that unanswered "Yes/No"-question!
Why not earlier that way - did they think we can't take the truth? Priorities might have shifted (for good?) but I'm still willing to wait for UT4, maybe we will get an announcement someday. The statement was done with a strategy that doesn't exclude later plans of reviving the franchise after all (mostly because the future is uncertain and a total no would upset most, but still!). We celebrated UT2004's 10th this year, maybe for UT3's 10th we will get an announcement...

Also, I forgot to comment on Blitz' screenshot: ROFL
UT-4-EVA, indeed! How did you make those? A mod or just a lot of luck in the "random numberplate generator"?

Luckily not in the Ruhr (then I wouldn't have wondered why the water damage happened last year, would have been a bit wet all time anyway).

Jokes aside, yes I'm living in the "Ruhrgebiet" (that's how we call this area around the Ruhr). Actually quite nice here, though the air stinks imho, even if the pollution decreased a whole lot the past decades due to planting of trees and filters in industry (especially since the 60s, 70s where one had thick smog not allowing a view radius past 100m and a red glowing sky at night due to the chemicals/metals). Thank god it's not like in the past anymore, that would drive me crazy I bet. Although the "dust" in this air is still very noticable when taking a time off on holidays somewhere around a clean area, for example at the sea or mountains. When coming back, my nose is always itching like crazy... uncomfortable smell - probably from too much traffic. The morning/night air is nicely fresh though, probably because the traffic decreases significantly in the evening.

Nothing new here! I've seen this article on the Epic Games forums and commented there as well. However, I can't say it enough, I'm pretty impressed by the new features of the Unreal Engine 4. I mean, I love Unreal Engine in general, but this stuff looks pretty cool. So far, I've seen all videos about the new features on YouTube and hell I like this kind of stuff. I'm not planing on getting the Unreal Engine 4, because I don't have the time to learn it and honestly I like to have an interface and a certain GUI. I like to create stuff and enjoy it with other people, you know what I mean, aye.

Now, enough of the new Unreal Engine 4 and all it's glory and beauty and features and blah blah blah. He said, they are not working on a new Unreal or Unreal Tournament game at the moment, so there might be still some hope left. Not that much, but still some hope and I personally hope for a new Unreal game. Nevertheless, I don't wanna have a modern-fashion-shooter, which doesn't require skill to take down AI and non-AI, even when a lot of people are predictable like AI. Regarding this, if there is ever going to be a new Unreal game, it is their goddamn duty to ship the editor with the game and not doing any DLC ****. Unreal fans wanna live out their creativity and not being forced to be limited by someone's greed for money.

In the end, as I said before I really hope for a new Unreal game, because I kinda grew up with this stuff, just like I did with the Alien franchise, H.R.Giger's art, Stargate, Babylon 5, Star Trek and all the other wonderful sci-fi stuff. These things kinda shaped who I am today and that's something I don't wanna get rid of it and wanna forget about. I wanna keep it! That's why I'm gonna play Unreal as long as possible and as long as it still runs. Otherwise, I'm gonna be pretty pissed. I took a closer look at Titanfall, a buddy of mine had a beta key and we 'enjoyed' the beta together. After 15mins we were already bored, because Titanfall is not what I expect from a good FPS. And what's the big deal, GTX770 and you can't play at max textures, because there are no 3GB of VRAM available, but the graphics are not that good! Holy hell, what the ****ing hell. That was just an example. I have no idea what to think about nowadays games, because upcoming games do not look that interesting to me and don't wanna waste a lot of money for a game, that doesn't even entertain me for one hour, you know.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the future and wonder what things gonna look like. Still, come and visit me in Chizra's temple, on Liandri, Atlantis, Face3, Torlan or HangingGardens or sometimes on Pandora. With all that written and said, I'm still waiting for the return of the sky demons.

And cut! Over and out!

I'll sit on the fence of this one. It could be a good thing...or a bad thing. Time will tell...
Facebook have aquired Oculus VR!

All I do know is once the consumer kits go on sale my wallet will be somewhat lighter!

Well, this is kinda...hmm...interesting, but I'll be keeping an eye on this one and see how it turns out. However, why did Facebook buy Oculus exactly? For what purpose? VR communication or something like that?

In case someone here missed it:
www.poweredbygamespy.com/pricing/

I guess if Epic doesn't do anything, it means "R.I.P. UT3". The UT3 masterserver will be gone May 31st and since multiplayer requires you to be logged in to gamespy, I guess this will mean that one can forget playing online.

Worst downer of the year so far. Was a nice time, I just hope something is going to happen.

Absolutely incredible!!!!!  This is hard to believe after Sweeney's comment.  I bit annoyed with Sweeney now that it seems they were jerking us around.  Great news though.

Excited - though skeptical about the f2p rumors.
I hope that, should it turn out to be f2p, it will be balanced and not pay to win. But other than that little fear, I'm actually relieved.

I'll also be gone the next days, was lucky to even get the news. My PC was making troubles, I believe it is the OS. Won't bother fixing it, so did some recent backups today and then am going to wipe it clean and put a fresh system on it. That should do it. Was about time to do so anyway.

As much as I was excited about Open Tournament (since we were told no new UT), if Epic's plans are to put out a basic game infrastructure and let the community complete it (Paul Meegan's tweet makes it sound like that "UE4 Dev Community + Epic. The future of Unreal Tournament" ) then there is really no point to have OT. That said, theoretically the maps started in OT could be used in UT4 with some mods.

It's a smart move to make this free!
UE4 is much easier to use and create more advanced content that UE3/UDK ever was so getting it into the hands of modders will naturally lead them onto making games from which Epic get a cut.
Best way to do this is to use their flagship moddable game free to the masses so everyone gets a taste of the new engine.

The idea is nice, but it's not fully fleshed out at some parts.

These aspects make me worry in particular:

- The sales on the marketplace might lead to a competition feeling provoking sales of maps, characters and mods with increasing price rather than putting them on there for free (mind you, the creator decides!). Of course there will be people who will follow the true spirit of Unreal (Tournament) modding and who will release their content for free as it always was the case in that franchise (I guess, you can count me in on that).

- If it's not competition feeling triggering it, then it could be a plain simple "Hey, this guy sells a map and it's worse than mine and people actually buy it and I put mine for free there while paying the monthly $19?! Screw that, I'm going to start selling it too and get my money back!" which can eventually lead to the aforementioned competition and higher and higher prices.

- The $19 fee (and the aforementioned marketplace issues) can scare off potential hobby mappers who are not serious about the engine and just want to create some maps for free and show them off for free.
I really hope Epic will decide to release a stripped down "editor-only" version with no context to the source code and/or blueprints - either for free or for a "pay once only" fee which allows you to update your editor based on the latest game release for free. That way you actually buy the editor and don't subscribe to it as you would for the stereotypical MMO. Mind you: The UT codebase might change, same for the engine, which will surely require you to stay subscribed to be able to release content (or at least pay again if you unsubscribe).

Of course one can argue about that and say that people pay for MMOs merely to play them while here you can play it for free and just have to pay for modding which is not possible in such games.

One can also say that if one likes the franchise this much, one can also "subscribe" to its modding and "pay Epic for all the fun one had in the past" and while I agree with both of these arguments (making the deal not all too bad seen from that perspective), it might still scare away those who knew the franchise from back then and just don't agree with that among which there can be quite some mapping talents (think of the guys creating maps for UT99 and Unreal, I have seen some masterpieces there, it would be a shame not to have them in as hobby mappers for the new UT). So I think a pay-once or free editor that allow for free upgrades to the new versions (without getting any of the full-UE4 privilegues nor any possibility to make an own game just with that editor) is the wiser decision.

Just my 2 cents.

But well, it's just a few days after the twitch stream and things might still change once there is a base game (which I hope).
And just to clear some things up: I understand why people would have to pay to be able to contribute to development considering you have to get access to the UT code and unreleased assets and the mere fact that you also get access to the engine source code by this and I think it can be rewarding enough if one's content gets approved by Epic for the base game which might be worth to pay for once or twice just to contribute a small class, character, material or map. It's definitely a big + for the portfolio considering how known the Unreal Tournament games still are.

PS: Talking about "twitch", can anyone explain to me why everyone suddenly starts calling UT a "twitch shooter"? I really hate that word tbh, it sounds weird - if not ridiculous! Honestly, oldschool shooter sounds way better and is pretty obvious and to the point.

Honestly, oldschool shooter sounds way better and is pretty obvious and to the point.

yes this is where i ll decide to jump in....or not....im ready to pay once, like i always did...for the rest i prefer to spend some money on servers

about the money, i actually play quite exclusivly Hawken and UT....Hawken is one of thoses "free games", they use the "pay for cosmetics" concept, nothing u can buy can affect your skills and u always have access to the full content of the game....it works nicely....i m a lil scared by the "paytowin" or "payformappacks" idea...completly out of the UT spirit

Assuming I have free time...I'm there! biggrin

I've asked Flak to find out if I'm able to continue Legacy in the new engine, as a mod for the new UT.  Hopefully Epic will allow this.

Uh, I think since Flak actually mentioned your name (!) in the Twitch announcement, I'd say you have some leverage! biggrin

If anybody is looking for a nice sp game check out Spec Ops: The Line. Most interesting part about this one is not gameplay but the narrative/story.
It's available on steam for just 5 bucks today, http://store.steampowered.com/app/50300/

Coungratulations to all french mates, France has reached quarterfinal in ice ockey world championship. You play great hockey and I wish you good luck. The only sad thing is you have quarterfinal place instead of my Slovakia. I hope ice hockey will be more and more popular in this beautiful country.
